There Be Dragons
Part 1 of 3 in our Galaxy Guides Pack: Exploring Bodily Autonomy and Healthy Sexuality for Children featuring a conversation with Queer Black Mama, Kristianna Smith
How do we give young kids the freedom to explore their sexuality without getting triggered by the fucked existence of the world?
Submitted by Kristianna Smith (she/they), parent of Ro, age 6 (she/they)
At the age of 6, Ro (she/they) is an emerging theater and movement artist who imagines themselves in their favorite stories by playing with dramatic makeup and wearing fantastical costumes they create themselves.
While they are fully expressing themselves as a budding storyteller and performer, their mama, Kristianna (she/they) is enthusiastically supporting their creativity in every possible way while internally – alarms are going off.
Kristianna’s desire to keep Ro safe has left them grappling with fears about how their child might be hypersexualized and body-shamed by coaches, parents, and their peers while they do the activities they love.
“There be dragons all down the path.”
